Substantial Achievements have been Yielded in Patent Authorization in Countries along the Silk Road

President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to  High-level Conference on IP for Countries along the “Belt and Road” in which he stressed that intellectual property regime played an important role in promoting Belt and Road initiative and extended his hope for intellectual property cooperation along the road. Guided by president Xi’s instruction, the State Intellectual Property Office researched and assessed the patent cooperation between China and countries alone the Silk Road.

In 2018, the number of patents applying for publication by China along the road totaled 6073, covering 19 countries. Among all the applicant destinations, South Korea ranked the first with 2146 applications, followed by India, Russia, Singapore and Vietnam with 1641, 818, 338, 272 respectively. The aggregated amount of the top five countries accounted for 85.9% of the total number of applications along the road.

In 2018, 49 countries along the road held patent authorization and application events, the number of each reaching 14877 and 22290, representing a year-on-year increase of 7.8% and 4.9% respectively.

The above statistics demonstrate that substantial improvement has been made between China and countries along the Silk Road in intellectual property cooperation as the Belt and Road Initiative goes deeper. Intellectual Property has become a new engine for deepening bilateral economic and trade relations.

According to the 35 technological category standard informed by WIPO, Information Technology occupies the majority of patent publication application pertaining to technologies in 2018 with the number reaching 833. Digital communication, electrical devices and electric energy rank the second and the third, totaling 748 and 421 respectively.

In 2018, information technology, communication and electronic equipment manufacturing were major industries of China’s application. 1606 patents were published, far exceeding other industries. Next are device manufacturing, chemical materials, software and information technology service industry and online service industry with 590, 485, 364 and 358 patents.

The top ten applicants were enterprises. From the first to the fifth are: Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.(597), Xiaomi Technology Co., Ltd.(459), Guangdong OPPO Mobile Telecommunications Corp., Ltd.(327), Tencent Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd.(247) and Shenzhen Zhongxing Microelectronics Technology Co., Ltd (152).
