Beijing 2022: protect Olympic intellectual property

The China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and the State Administration for Market Supervision (SAMR) has lately issued an action plan to protect the Olympic patents, trademarks, and other intellectual properties during the 2022 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.


Five categories of emblems, logos, and designations are listed to be major objects of the protective action:

1. Category 1: The Olympic symbol (the Olympic rings), the Olympic flag, the Olympic emblem, and the Olympic Anthem;

2. Category 2: Proprietary designations such as the Olympic, Olympia, Olympic Games and their abbreviations such as Olympics;

3. Category 3: The designations and their abbreviations, mascots, anthems, torches, the slogan, the “host city and the year of opening” sign, designations and emblem of the organizing committee of the 2022 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games;

4. Category 4: The Olympic Charter and symbols used by the previous and current Olympics such as sports pictograms;

5. Category 5: Emblems, logos, and designations of the Paralympic Games.
