According to China Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) main statistics on intellectual property, from January to February 2020, 225,000 invention patents were applied and 55,000 were authorized; 392,000 utility model patents were applied and 238,000 were authorized; 88,000 design patent were applied and 106,000 were authorized; 70,400 PCT international patent applications were accepted; 70,900 re-examination requests were received, and 80,800 cases were closed. The number of trademark applications in China was 1.044 million, and the number of trademark registrations was 847,000. 20,000 trademark oppositions were applied, and 17,000 examinations of oppositions were completed. 1191 applications for Madrid trademark international registration were received from Chinese applicants; 156 geographical indication trademarks were approved for registration; 673 applications for the layout design of integrated circuits were issued, and 1,254 certificates were issued.

I. Patent

From January to February 2020, there were 225,000 invention patent applications in China, and 55,000 invention patents were authorized. As of the end of February 2020, the effective amount of invention patents in China was 2.706 million, of which the mainland China’s (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) effective patents were 1.894 million, and the number of invention patents per 10,000 people reached 13.5.

From January to February, there were 392,000 applications for utility model patents and 238,000 were authorized. As of the end of February 2020, the effective amount of utility model patents was 5.411 million.

From January to February, there were 88,000 design patents applications and 106,000 design patents were authorized. As of the end of February 2020, the effective amount of design patents was 1.858 million.

From January to February, CNIPA accepted 7,400 PCT international patent applications, of which 6,400 were from China.

From January to February, CNIPA accepted 7,900 requests for re-examination, and closed 8,800 cases, accepted 70,000 requests for invalidation and closed 14,400 cases.

II. Trademark

From January to February 2020, the number of trademark applications in China was 1.044 million, and the number of trademark registrations was 847,000. By the end of February 2020, there were 25.926 million valid registered trademarks.

From January to February, there were 20,000 applications for trademark opposition in China and 17,000 examinations of oppositions were completed.

From January to February, CNIPA received 1,191 applications for the Madrid trademark international registration by Chinese applicants.

From January to February, CNIPA received 60,000 applications for various trademark review cases, and closed 45,000 cases.

III. Geographical Indications and Layout Designs of Integrated Circuits

From January to February 2020, CNIPA approved the use of 52 geographical indication product-dedicated enterprises and 156 registered geographical indication trademarks. As of February 2020, a total of 2,385 geographical indication products have been approved, 8,537 enterprises have been approved for the use of special signs, and 5,474 geographical indication trademarks have been registered.

From January to February 2020, there were 673 applications for registration of integrated circuit layout designs and 1,254 certificates issued.
