Huawei's First 5G Innovation Center Settles in Pudong, Shanghai

Shanghai, August 31 (Xinhua) 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) was closed on August 31. As the main venue of the conference, Pudong New Area in Shanghai witnessed the launching of 50 projects, including Huawei 5G Innovation Center and SAIC 5G Electronics Innovation Center for Intelligent and Connected Vehicle. Thanks to a solid industrial foundation, the formation of 5G+AI ecosphere picked up pace in Pudong.

At the WAIC Pudong Summit on August 31, Chen yifang, vice president of 5G product line of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., said that Huawei 5G Innovation Center was Huawei's first and sole 5G-themed innovation center in the world. Huawei would provide all-round technological support for innovation centers and enterprises through institutions including Shanghai Research Center, so as to accelerate the transformation of 5G R&D achievements and create a 5G innovation ecosystem with global influence.

5G, featuring high speed, low latency and wide connection, made the transmission of ultra-high-definition (UHD) video possible. With the initiation of Huawei 5G Innovation Center, Shanghai's Jinqiao Demonstration Base for UHD Video Industry and Jinqiao 5G Industrial Eco-park were also officially unveiled. According to Jinqiao Development Zone of Shanghai, UHD video was one of the areas with earliest 5G commercial use and one of the important AI application scenarios. Its combination with culture, entertainment, manufacturing, transportation, education, medical treatment and security would bring a huge industrial application market.

Both 5G and AI required advanced chips to provide powerful computing power. At the summit, a number of chip projects including Shanghai Research and Development Center of Yangtze Memory Technology Corp (YMTC) were launched in Shanghai IC Design Industrial Park in Zhang Jiang Science City. The head of Zhang Jiang High Tech Park said that in the first half of this year, 12 projects were started in the industrial park, and that the goal was to build an IC design industry with a production value of 100 billion Yuan.

As the first pilot area of AI innovation and application in China, Pudong in 2018 attracted 383 AI enterprises, accounting for more than 1/3 of all AI enterprises in Shanghai. With the emergence of Jinqiao 5G Industrial Ecosystem Park, Zhang Jiang AI Island and Shanghai IC Design Industrial Park, 5G+AI would provide a strong driving force for industrial transformation and upgrading in China.
