Greater Bay Area 5G Industry Alliance Established in Hong Kong to Promote Cross

Hong Kong, Aug. 21 (China News Service) Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao telecommunications agencies have set up “the Greater Bay Area 5G Industry Alliance” (“the Alliance”) in Hong Kong on August 21 to strengthen close cooperation of high-tech enterprises in the three regions, promote coordinated development of industries, advance the innovation and development of smart urban agglomeration in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and build an international science and technology innovation center.

The Alliance was initiated and established by China Mobile (Hong Kong), China Mobile (Guangdong), CTM and Guangdong Communication Industry Association. It has founding members from more than 100 companies within GBA, and works together with academia and government to build a 5G industry ecosystem.

Leung Chun-ying, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended the inauguration ceremony. He said that in recent years, Hong Kong has strengthened its ties with GBA cities in hardware facilities such as Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong high-speed rail, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Liantang Port. After applying 5G technology, Hong Kong has strengthened “connectivity” in communications, which is believed to be conducive to a new model of “cross-regional” and “cross-industrial” cooperation in the three regions.

Li Fanfeng, founding chairman of the Alliance and chairman and chief executive officer of China Mobile (Hong Kong), said that as the 5G era was coming, the 5G industry would directly create economic value of 6.3 trillion RMB, economic growth of 3 trillion RMB and about 8 million job opportunities in China by 2030. The Alliance would promote the development of the 5G industry in GBA from three aspects: building a resource sharing platform, promoting product research and development in GBA, and encouraging cooperation between enterprises and research institutes.

Li Feng, honorary chairman of the Alliance and chairman of China Mobile (Hong Kong), said that in addition to creating business opportunities for enterprises, the application of 5G technology would also bring new development space and job opportunities for young people and provide "an excellent opportunity for them to start their own businesses." The Alliance would establish a platform for entrepreneurship and development through competitions, incubation projects and other forms to help young people dedicated to scientific innovation.
