The First Half of 2019 Saw a Steady Growth of Foreign Intellectual Property Applications

Data released by the National Intellectual Property Administration of China (CNIPA) on July 9 demonstrated that in the first half of 2019, foreign intellectual property applications in China increased steadily, showing the confidence of the international community in China's intellectual property protection.

In the first half of 2019, the number of foreign invention patent and trademark applications in China reached 78,000 and 127,000 respectively, up by 8.6% and 15.4% year-on-year.

In terms of countries, Japan, the United States and Germany were among the top three applicants for invention patents in China, with year-on-year increases of 12.6%, 3.4% and 6.6% respectively. The United States, Japan and the United Kingdom were among the top 3 applicants for trademarks in China, an increase of 13.6%, 31.4% and 56.9% year-on-year respectively.

"The number of applications for intellectual property filed by non-residents serves as a ‘weathervane’ and ‘barometer’ for a country's intellectual property protection and business environment." Ge Shu, director of CNIPA’s Strategic Planning Department, said that the continued strong growth of foreign intellectual property applications in China fully showcased the firm confidence of global innovation entities in China's intellectual property protection and business environment.

Ge said that China will promote the role of intellectual property system in protecting and encouraging innovation, continue to vigorously create a business environment and innovation ecosystem that respects the value of knowledge, and contribute to global scientific and technological exchanges, innovation integration and shared development.
