Intel Reported to Launch Massive IP Auction after Exiting 5G Business

After announcing to exit 5G smartphone modem chip business in April, Intel is reportedly auctioning off approximately 8,500 patents which include cellular portfolio and connected device portfolio, according to a Taiwan news.

Anue from Taiwan reported on June 26 that in the mid-April, Apple and Qualcomm took to the stage for the “big reconciliation”. In the meantime, Inter announced to exit the 5G smartphone modem chip market. It now prepares to auction off its cellular and connected device portfolios.

It is reported that the cellular portfolio includes approximately 6,000 patent assets related to 3G, 4G and 5G cellular standards and over 1,000 assets related to wireless implementation technologies.

The connected device portfolio includes 500 patents of smaller scale but with “broad applicability” across the semiconductor and electronics industries.

The report states that although there will be large sales, Inter will retain significant wireless assets. Extrapolated from past experience, the revenue brought by this auction for Intel can amount to billions of US dollars (USD 1 equals to 6.9 Yuan).
