China Issued 5G Licenses for Commercial Use

Market Regulator will Investigate Gree's Claim against Rival Aux

CNIPA Vows to Cleanse Unscrupulous Attorney Acts

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has issued commercial licenses for 5G on June 6, according to China Central Television. Four major telecom carriers -- China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Broadcasting Network -- received the first batch of four 5G commercial licenses, said the report. As of May, Chinese companies account for more than 30 percent of all essential patents related to international standards for 5G, according to a previous China Daily report. The next-generation tech is expected to be at least 10 times faster than 4G, and its huge capacity to connect things will enable smart factories, self-driving vehicles and other applications. China's three big telecom carriers are forecast to spend 900 billion to 1.5 trillion Yuan in total on 5G network construction from 2020 to 2025, according to a report from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. China is set to become the world's largest 5G market by 2025, with 460 million 5G users, according to a forecast by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association, an industry group.

An ongoing battle between two major air-conditioner manufacturers is heating up as a key retail promotion gala approaches on June 11. Gree Electric Appliances Inc has accused Aux Group, of Ningbo, Zhejiang province, of producing and selling substandard air conditioners. The State Administration for Market Regulation said on its website on June 10 that it considers the matter to be of great importance, and it has ordered local market regulators to investigate the allegation as soon as possible. Gree posted a statement on its Sina Weibo account claiming the energy efficiency of eight models made by Aux is significantly lower than what Aux claims on its labels. Aux responded on its Weibo account that Gree had disparaged Aux's product quality, which it called a clear act of unfair competition given next week's shopping event and the approach of the peak season for air-conditioner sales. The company said it has reported the case to police, and will file a lawsuit.

Recently, China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) announced the launching of Operation Blue Sky, a two-year-long campaign targeting illegal acts of the patent attorney profession, such as doing business without a license, representing abnormal patent applications, registering qualification for work without actual work, and soliciting in underhanded ways. Patent firms will be randomly checked by randomly dispatched enforcement officers and results of the checks will be released on a single platform. Those suspected of criminal acts will be transferred to the police. Operation Blue Sky is one of the main programs on strengthening and improving regulations in process and afterwards and promoting favorable developments in the patent attorney profession. In this April, CNIPA issued the Working Plan for Strengthening Patent Attorney Regulation, highlighting key tasks of the Operation Blue Sky. According to the Plan, Intellectual Property Utilization and Promotion Department of CNIPA and local intellectual property offices across the provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities will take on relevant tasks for the campaign.
