Top legislature closes bimonthly session, revised laws adopted

Int'l copyright fair to be held in port city Qingdao

The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) closed its four-day bimonthly session April 23, adopting the revised Judges Law and the Procurators Law, as well as an amendment to a package of eight laws including the Construction Law. Li Zhanshu, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the closing meeting, attended by 170 committee members. The lawmakers ratified a treaty between China and Barbados on criminal judicial assistance, and another between China and Azerbaijan on the transfer of sentenced persons. During the session, the lawmakers also reviewed other legislative bills, including the draft vaccine administration law, the revised drug administration law, and the sections on personality and property rights of the draft civil code Li said the adopted revisions to the Judges Law and the Procurators Law consolidated and deepened the achievements of judicial reform. The adopted amendment to a package of eight laws would further improve the business environment, he said.

Eastern Shandong Province's port city of Qingdao will host the International Copyright Fair 2019 in July, local authorities said on April 24. Organized by the provincial copyright administration and the municipal government, the fair will be held between July 5 and 7. The first Intellectual Property (IP) licensing center of the country will be set up at the fair, authorities said at a press conference. Participants from home and abroad will cover a wide range of fields in the IP industry, such as food, cartoon, cyber games, toys, cultural and tourism products and online literature, according to the organizers. International organizations, including the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, will take part. Forums featuring a variety of topics, such as the development of China's IPR and copyright protection, and exhibitions will be held at the fair.

The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) recently saw a sticky situation of two trademark disputes involving the same parties: artisanal bakery The Patissier LLP (“The Patissier”) and chocolate maker Aalst Chocolate Pte Ltd (“Aalst Chocolate”). The Patissier was successful in both disputes, where its mark was upheld as valid whereas the opponent Aalst Chocolate’s mark was revoked.

The Patissier is a local boutique bakery specialising in French-style baked goods, with two outlets here. Aalst Chocolate is a Singapore-based company that manufactures and sells chocolates and chocolate-based products.
