Qualcomm and HMD Global Oy announced on May 13 that the two companies have entered a direct worldwide license agreement that covers branded single-mode and multimode devices manufactured and marketed by HMD Global under the Nokia brand. HMD Global will be able to develop, manufacture and sell 3G, 4G and 5G single-mode and multimode complete devices and will pay Qualcomm royalties for the patent.

As is known, HMD Global Oy began to operate Nokia mobile phone business and has exclusive rights to the Nokia brand for feature phones and tablets. Florian Seiche, CEO of HMD Global once said the company was “committed to providing better phones. This is our driving force, so we will work closely with best partners around the world. Our collaboration with Qualcomm enables us to bring leading innovations to the market and deliver on our unique consumer promise.”

“Qualcomm is pleased to sign 3G, 4G and 5G multimode licensing agreements with HMD Global that build on our long-standing technology relationship,” said Alex Rogers, the executive vice president and president of Qualcomm Technology Licensing (QTL). “Qualcomm is leading the transition to 5G, and we are proud to make our breakthrough 3G/4G/5G technologies available to leading OEMs like HMD Global and to support them in delivering compelling products around the world.”

It is predicable that collaboration between Qualcomm and HMD Global Oy will accelerate business use of 5G smart phones under the Nokia brand.
