Foxit seeks $5.5 mln in damages in lawsuit against Kingsoft

China’s Foxit Software (福建福昕软件开发股份有限公司) in January filed a computer software copyright infringement lawsuit against Chinese rival Kingsoft Corporation (北京金山办公软件股份有限公司) at the Fuzhou Intermediate People’s Court of Fujian province, seeking 35 million yuan ($5.5 million) in damages.

 

In the complaint, Fujian-based Foxit Software accused Kingsoft Corporation of ripping off its technology allowing users to export or save files as Portable Document Formats (PDFs) in 35 Kingsoft’s PowerWord softwares.

 

Foxit develops PDF software and tools used to create, edit, sign, and secure files and digital documents and got listed in China’s Shanghai Stock Exchange STAR Market in 2020. Kingsoft is listed on the Hong Kong stock market, known for its flagship products WPS Office and cloud storage service Kingsoft Cloud. Foxit has brought several legal cases against Kingsoft since 2016 for breach of the technology co-development contract and computer software copyright infringement.

 

The courts found for Kingsoft in the lawsuits filed by Foxit. In a breach of contract case, China’s Supreme People’s Court upheld the lower court’s decision ordering Foxit to pay 300,000 yuan ($47,000) in damages to Kingsoft in December 2021.
